Winners of the A.C.T.S Writing Competition 16th theme FRIENDSHIP

1st: Lee Min Han

In our daily lives, we may have met many friends. Some of our friends are good while others are ‘bad’. Friends can influence us. Good friends can influence us to study and work hard while bad friends can influence us to do bad things like stealing, smoking and sometimes even consuming drugs. Thus, we must make the correct choice and should not be influenced by bad friends. For most of us, if we choose the wrong path, it will sometimes affect us for the rest of our life.
I have a friend who is very hardworking. We have been the best of friends since we were Primary 3. As he always urged me to study hard, it is the reason why I am able to do well for my exams, so I consider him my best friend as he can influence me in a good way. There was an occasion when I was waiting for my Co-Curriculum Activity to start, my best friend came over while I was playing. He asked if I had done my homework and I replied no. He urged me to accompany him to the library to study and finish up my homework. I was reluctant to go, but his one sentence made me change my mind. ‘Every second is very precious. Once it is gone, it will never come back.’ Till date, his sentence etched deeply in my mind and it constantly reminded me to work hard.
I really think that having a good friend is really important as I myself have experienced it before. Now, I make wise decisions of mixing with those who are more hardworking and a better character as I know that they have a great impact on my life.

Dark ominous clouds were drifting across the sky, threatening to open up its floodgates. It was five minutes before dismissal when the dark clouds were looming over us.
When the bell rang to signify the end of class, I immediately sped out of my classroom, hoping to reach home before it started raining. Just as I was about to exit from the gate, the clouds opened, causing a light drizzle. Soon, it became a heavy downpour. “Humph” I sighed. There was a test tomorrow and now it is raining. How am I supposed to reach home as soon as possible to study?
I thought of braving the rain but I did not want to fall sick. I thought of using my bag as an umbrella, but my revision items would get wet and will be illegible. Suddenly, my classmate Sean walked towards me and asked: “I have an umbrella, do you need me to escort you home?” he asked. I agreed. While walking, we chatted animatedly. Unconsciously, we had already reached home.
“I think you can go home now. It is not raining anymore.” I said. However, he still followed me into the lift. Then I pressed the lift button “2”. When we reached level 2, I asked him: “Why are you still following me?”  He replied: “I live there,” as he pointed to the right.
Then, I realized –we were not only classmates, or friends, but also neighbour! Through this incident, our friendship had strengthened.

Sydney won the skipping competition a few weeks ago. Everyone was happy for her. She was proud that her hard work had finally paid off.
However, a few days after the competition, Sydney overheard two girls talking about her while she was still in the cubicle. She recognized one of the voice belonged to Jasmine, one of her best friends.  Jasmine said,” Sydney must have cheated when she won the skipping competition!” The other girl agreed and they both started to giggle.  When Sydney heard that, her heart was broken and she sobbed quietly in the cubicle.  She thought how could anyone think that she cheated. She felt really sad.  She said to herself, “ Jasmine has never said bad things about me before. I trusted her. I don’t understand why she spread this kind of rumours about me!”
The next day Sydney confronted Jasmine about this. They met in canteen during recess time. Sydney asked her, “ Why did you spread the rumor that I had cheated my way in the skipping competition?” Jasmine was taken a back and look bewildered. Immediately she replied, “ No, I did not mean it when I said that you cheated. I was only joking. I am really sorry to have made you feel like this.”
And soon the two best friends made up. “I’ll tell you what. Let’s get an ice cream. My treat.” Jasmine told Sydney.  Sydney smiled and the two of them started to chat happily.
